Family research: “Good for the soul”
Three years of pandemic are behind us. We have become accustomed to restrictions and uncertainties. Every day, we are confronted with existential issues such as the “climate crisis” and the “energy crisis”. In numerous industries, companies are fighting for survival. And since 24 February 2022, we have been witnessing the war in Ukraine. For decades, we had considered war in Europe impossible. Now it is here.
And so the question arises: with so much uncertainty about the future, is there still time and energy left for family research, i.e. for reflecting on and focusing on one’s own ancestors?
My personal answer is: yes!
And: Looking back on my family’s past simply makes me happy, it comforts and reassures me, because I gain insight into the lives of those who came before me, into their ups and downs, their joys and sorrows. I realise that I am a link in a long chain of generations. This relieves me, because it puts some experiences into perspective. When I pick up documents or photos relating to the lives of my parents, grandparents or more distant ancestors, it makes me feel good. Genealogical research and sharing it with the family is good for the soul. This is my experience, which I share with many people both within and outside the family.
